Sensational Soul Music From Today’s Best Soul Singers & Funk Bands
The funkiest, most soulful, rootsiest singers in the music business today are all right here in this Spotify playlist. Plenty of deeply talented men & women sing their hearts & souls out, and keep real Soul music genuine, alive…and funky.
You’ll just never hear them on the radio. Regardless, these musicians are rocking festivals all over the world, and enjoying success on their own terms.
Most of these bands thrive live, and are at their best on stage. Just like in the above video with The Pimps of Joytime, you’ll often hear superior versions and extended jams when you catch these artists live.
Sensational Soul Singers & Fabulous Funk Bands
You’ll hear some of my favorite Funk & Soul music artists from the 2000s in this playlist. For example, I love Breakestra — they’re fantastic live and on record! They’re known mostly as an instrumental group, but their singers are excellent too. I heard they called it quits, though. If anyone knows the story let us know in the comments below.
Meyer Hawthorne and DeRobert both sing about flakey women that did them wrong. But, most of these songs are uplifting, positive party starters that make you feel good.
From new Funk bands, like Analog Son & The Soul Motivators, to the Brooklyn Funk & Soul scene, including the gone but never forgotten, Miss Sharon Jones, — this playlist celebrates all those hard working musicians keeping American (and some U.K. too) Soul music alive & well.
Hear a terrific 2016 tune from Durand Jones & The Indications to start things off. They’re on Colemine Records, and released one of the best Soul music records of recent years. Their debut even made my Top 20 Albums of 2016.
Also hear from Soul Scratch, another Colemine Records Soul music powerhouse. Listen to “Be Kind” in this Spotify playlist from their powerful record, Pushing Fire. It is modernized, old-school Soul music. It’s good-time music, and classic lovers’ Rock Ike Turner could have made. Like all good guys, singer Dale Spollet, just demands that his lover be a kind woman.
Esther Dee & Jo Marshall, the Soul Sisters from Crowd Company, the critically acclaimed, UK based, 8-piece Funk-Soul outfit give us “Take Off The Crown” from their 2017 album, Stone & Sky. The song captures a fun party vibe with catchy hooks from the outset. This tune is just one example of how the band evokes the spirit of the 60s and early 70s Funk as well as modern day funky jam bands, which you’ll hear in the wah-wah, nasty Hammond organ, and heavy rhythm section. And yet, it’s the ladies that shine here, and make “Take Off The Crown” a phenomenal tune.
And, get into more of the best contemporary Soul singers, like Nigel Hall, Leon Bridges, Judith Hill, The New Mastersounds, Erykah Badu, Myles Sanko, D’Angelo, Tedeschi Trucks Band, The California Honeydrops, Charles Bradley, Lee Fields, and more.
Several of these artists appear on my best albums of 2015 list because they’re making my favorite independent music these days. I look forward to more new music from them in future. And, they’ll almost certainly be touring a ton, so look out for them & catch them live when they play in your town.

Check out this cool cover version of some Sly & The Family Stone by Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings with The Tedeschi Trucks Band. Their tour together must have been awesome!
See & hear Leon Bridges live. He sings Soul music like it was the 60s, and does it in his own irresistible modern style…
