Here you can see what the categories are for the free, done-for-you Spotify playlists. Each one has a link to various playlists (sometimes sub-categories), and to posts, which have articles describing each new Spotify playlist I make for Funkish fans, and the musicians highlighted.
Also, sign up here to get them emailed to you twice a week. There are some extra playlists only in the email newsletter. You can listen to the playlists out of order here on the blog, and read the articles on Funkish.Audio before they get emailed to you.
I always embed the Spotify player here for you to listen to while you read, and I link to the playlist too. I recommend you click the link to open it in your web browser, then follow the playlist so you can go back and listen to it whenever you want on mobile, or with the Spotify desktop app (which is 10x better than their web browser player).
When you follow them in Spotify, it allows you to create a Playlist Folder, which you can label Funkish to keep organized.
The Basic Spotify Playlist Categories Are:
Cooler Than Categories: Genre bending music that’s too cool to categorize. It’s a variety of predominantly instrumental music fusing various traditions.
“World Music” is what they call in English, pretty much all music that isn’t in English. So, it’s a pretty broad term for a very vast subject. It’s basically music not sung in English, or instrumental music based on traditional, indigenous rhythms foreign to Anglo-Saxon music.
It’s not a good way to describe the category or give people an idea of what the music will be like. That’s why I call this “Cooler Than Categories,” which is a collection of Genre-Bending music from around the world that’s “too cool to categorize”.
It isn’t old sounding folkloric music. It’s a diverse mix of mostly instrumental music fusing various traditions & cultures, played by great musicians from anywhere in the world.
Of course it will be modern, funky & energetic. This one’s my favorite!
Nu Funk: This will be mostly instrumental Funk, plus some modern new jams with vocals. Think, The New Mastersounds, Breakestra, Galactic, Pimps of Joytime, Third Coast Kings, Orgone, Speedometer, The Brownout, Ikebe Shakedown, the whole Daptone family, and much more — the funk just keeps evolving & getting better!
Old School Funk: The greats of the 70s — James Brown, Isaac Hayes, Parliament/Funkadelic, Stax, and all the legends! I call this site Funkish because it’s a compilation of all that is funky regardless of country, skin color, or decade.
Old School Funk will be a smaller part of the playlists, since this isn’t a greatest hits of the 70s type of thing. And yet, they form the foundation that musicians from all over the world have been building on since. So, I’ll work on curating the nuggets — the classic hits, most soulful grooves & obscure scorchers — for your enjoyment.
FUNK: When it’s a combination of the two above, let’s just call it FUNK.
Classic Soul Music: Check out the greatest soul singers (both soul brothers & soul sisters) from the 60s, 70s, and today. You’ll hear playlists with Bill Withers, Otis Redding, Al Green, and all the best soul men. And, of course, the wonderful women that make soul music special — Aretha Franklin, Lyn Collins, Rose Royce, and many more.
Neo Soul Music: Many people don’t like the label Neo Soul, but musical categories are always dubious. It’s basically more underground soul music with a lot more heart & grit than popular R&B. You’ll hear marvelous music from current soul singers like Nigel Hall, Myles Sanko, D’Angelo, and more. And, let’s not forget today’s sublime soul sisters, like Sharon Jones, Erykah Badu & Alexia Coley.
Jazz: Mostly Jazz Funk & Hard Bop, but I’m not going to split hairs here. The focus is on joyful Jazz that swings, hits a good groove, and makes you feel wonderful when you listen to it. It could be from the 50s, 60s, 70s…and I definitely will highlight some of the current generation of Jazz greats. There won’t be over-long obnoxious soloing, or weird avant garde Jazz.
Reggae: The best of 1970s Jamaican music — Bob Marley, Burning Spear, Dennis Brown, Gregory Isaacs, Delroy Wilson, and the list goes on. No other country has had such an amazing output of outstanding music per capita, and the 70s were an extremely prolific period for high quality music in Jamaica.
Latina Diversa: Latin America is a big place with a lot of cultural differences, and awesome music. Here you’ll find a little 70s Salsa Dura, current & classic Latin funk, crazy Cumbia, and modern Latin hybrids.
Brasileira: A big place within a diverse Latin America, Brazil deserves its own category. I love Brazilian music! Here, you’ll get a dynamic variety of mostly current cool Brazilian music (but no cheesy Axe & Brazilian Top 40 of course), killer Samba, and 1970s Brazilian Funk classics.
Africanism: African music is also extremely diverse like Latin music. This category focuses on the funkier/jazzier side — Ethio-Jazz, Afrobeat, Hi-Life, Ju Ju, Soukous, and some Mali strings — it’s mostly older, but has cool new stuff too. It’s all about the music of the African diaspora so everything else funky is built on an African foundation.
Rock & Roll: There isn’t a lot of Rock music featured in Funkish. But, when there is it’s on the soulful side. And, sometimes I’ll throw in a playlist highlighting the greats. Or, a particular sound I really dig…like reverby Surf Guitar music.
